Death by Eyeshadow (repost)

Anti-aging cream for “tweens”?   And “polyethylene glycol touching a highly absorbable mucous membrane”?  Oh, no, but yes please read on…  I was just saying earlier today that for me, PAIN IS NOT BEAUTY!! But sometimes (and especially for unknowing young girls), we can’t even feel the chemicals hurting us, and that’s worse!

Death By Eyeshadow, Jamila Owens-Todd, N.D.

To what cost do we owe to being beautiful? How did we get to the point of sacrificing viable, healthy cells for blush and eyeliner? Today on All Things Considered (NPR), Peggy Orenstein was discussing her new book, “Cinderella Ate My Daughter” and the trials of the new princess. She discussed a new cosmetic line targeted to the “tween” groups in which there is an anti-aging product. Seriously? Is this not overly unreasonable? The conversation was geared towards the marketing to this “tween” group in order to start the insecurity, I mean, makeup sales at an even earlier age. This, is beyond overt marketing. This has now approached the field of psychological and emotional development and its emerging deficit in our youth. We have now breached the lines of respect that is owed to women, yes, even young-women-to-be. This campaign of encouraging a physical change (via makeup) can be quite detrimental to overall body image as these girls age into adolescence. The fact that makeup is growing more available to this age group says that the desire to look different can easily fester into the need to look different. [I will not get into my feminist rant on our patriarchal society and its implications on all things female, but just know that it serves as the backdrop for this blog entry].

The cosmetics industry and its laughable regulations has profited off of insecurity and low self-esteem, and to much avail I might add. Understand, I am not presenting this to be the makeup killjoy with my lone tube of unscented, unflavored lip balm. Beyond the repulsive marketing, it is simply staggering to me to see the major cosmetic companies adding in harmful chemicals to a product that will be applied directly to your lips or inner eyelid. The chemist in me freaks out at the thought of polyethylene glycol touching a highly absorbable mucous membrane. The fashion-inspired woman in me, understands the fierceness of a smoky eye…to a degree. My observations are easy to come by as I have never been as keen on applying makeup. I watched my sisters go through extensive routines of makeup application, only to have to continue to touch-up their faces throughout the day. Why bother, I would ask. If you see me in lip gloss, I must be in attendance to the Presidential inauguration or some similar event of purported importance. I am not against the tribal practice of applying paint to the face, that millions of my fellow species will aim to do every morning (men included, not to leave you out DIVA!). Wouldn’t it be nice, if we used those same tribal clays and dyes of pomegranate or blueberries? Oh, but we can. There are companies, hundreds of them, who have chosen to be play the part of the radical enterprises and offer an alternative of natural, chemical-free cosmetics.

Now, once we have made the environmental responsibility of selecting a better face paint, can we now consider the social responsibility of not imposing this ritual on our young girls?

Salt Uncovered

Oh, salt…

It’s like the lemon of the party, and everyone is pointing a finger!  But how informed are you about it’s value?  Many cringe or turn away without really understanding just what salt does.  The following articles discuss two of the most famed salts of the earth–sea salt and pink Himalayan salt–and offer a great comparative analysis with ordinary table salt.

It’s about time we get the facts straight and open ourselves to the benefits of salt.  This post will hopefully help break down any fear and suspicion you may have, allowing you to make wise, informed decisions about your intake.

The Healthful Benefits of Sea Salt

by KATIE

Original post here

sea saltSalt can be a controversial subject for those who are taking care of our health. It gets a bad rap most of the time. Doctors tell us to avoid it, and some of us listen. However, what those doctors usually don’t mention is that there is a big difference between regular old table salt and sea salt. But before looking more closely at salt, it’s important to understand why salt is a necessary part of our diet.
• Salt provides sodium, which is necessary for life.
• It helps with muscle contraction and expansion, nerve stimulation, the proper functioning of the adrenals, and other biological processes, as well.
• Salt also provides chloride, which helps produce acids necessary to digest protein and enzymes for carbohydrate digestion, and is necessary for proper brain functioning and growth.
• Salt contains magnesium, which is important for producing enzymes, nerve transmission, bone formation, forming tooth enamel, and resistance to heart disease, and it also contains many other trace minerals. Babies and children are in special need of salt for their developing brains.Excessive salt can certainly cause health problems, but it’s important to realize that we need salt in our diets. Some people need more than others and some need less, but we all need it.

Regular table salt and sea salt – what’s the difference?

For starters, table salt is highly refined.
• It goes through a process that removes the magnesium and trace minerals.
• In order to keep the salt dried out, various additives are included, such as aluminum compounds.
• The natural iodine is also destroyed during the refining process, so it is usually added back in the form of potassium iodide.
• Dextrose is added as a stabilizer, which affects the color, and so a bleaching agent is used to finish it off.

In contrast, a good quality sea salt is sun dried. It will still contain microscopic amounts of sea life, which provides natural iodine. It will be gray in color and even slightly moist. This means there is a large mineral content. I really like Celtic sea salt. Red sea salt from the shores of Hawaii is another great option.

Sea salt has a much stronger flavor than table salt, so you don’t need to use as much. The kind I use is pretty coarse, so I put it in a salt grinder. This is not the same as a pepper grinder – a pepper grinder has steel blades for hard peppercorns, while a salt grinder has ceramic blades that resist salt’s naturally corrosive properties. I dry the salt out very gently in my toaster oven on low before putting it in the salt grinder, so that it will pass easily through the blades.

If you are going to purchase canned or processed foods, look for those without added salt. Unless the item is organic, it usually won’t contain sea salt, but rather the highly refined form of salt – and often in very large quantities. You can always salt the food yourself with sea salt; it will taste better and be better for you.

Have you discovered the beauty of sea salt? Do you have other things to add about the importance of salt? Have you experienced any health benefits after switching to sea salt?

The Benefits of Himalayan Salt

Author: Dr. Edward Group

Himalayan crystal salt is far superior to traditional iodized salt which is extremely toxic. Himalayan salt is millions of years old. It is a pure form of salt, untouched by many of the toxins and pollutants that pervade other forms of ocean salt.

Himalayan Crystal Salt

Known in the Himalayas as “white gold,” Himalayan Crystal Salt contains the same 84 natural minerals and elements found in the human body. This crystal form of salt has also been maturing over the past 250 million years under intense tectonic pressure, creating an environment of zero exposure to toxins and impurities.

What is more, this salt’s unique cellular structure allows it to store vibrational energy. Its minerals exist in a colloidal form, meaning that they are tiny enough for our cells to easily absorb them.

Himalayan Crystal Salt: The Health Benefits

The health benefits of using natural Himalayan Crystal Salt may include

  • Controlling the water levels within the body, regulating them for proper functioning
  • Promoting stable pH balance in the cells, including the brain.
  • Encouraging excellent blood sugar health
  • Aiding in reducing the common signs of aging
  • Promoting cellular hydroelectric energy creation
  • Promoting the increased absorption capacities of food elements within the intestinal tract
  • Aiding vascular health
  • Supporting healthy respiratory function
  • Lowering incidence of sinus problems, and promoting over-all sinus health
  • Reducing muscle cramps
  • Increasing bone strength
  • Naturally promoting healthy sleep patterns
  • Creating a healthy libido
  • In combination with water, it is necessary for blood pressure regulation
  • Prevents cellulite, when compared to table salt
  • Reduces chances of developing rheumatism, arthritis and gout, when compared to common chemically-treated salt
  • Reduces chances of developing kidney and gall bladder stones when compared to common chemically-treated salt

Himalayan Crystal Salt

Why is standard table salt “The Health Destroyer”

Many people are unaware that common table salt is actually full of many forms of chemicals and even sugar! Salt, while necessary for life as we know it, can be dangerous if taken in this chemical form.

Commonly sold table salt is composed of 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals like iodine and absorbents, and sugar. Common salt is also dried at more than 1,200° Fahrenheit, a process which zaps many of the natural chemical structures of naturally-occuring salt.

The table and cooking salt found in most homes, restaurants, and all processed foods, is empty of any nutritional value. It is lacking in the precious trace minerals that make salt good for us. After processing, salt is basically sodium chloride, an unnatural chemical type of salt that our body actually sees as a foreign toxic invader!

When we ingest this type of salt, our body cannot dispose of it in a natural, healthy way. This can lead to inflammation of the tissues, water retention and high blood pressure over time.

Furthermore, processed salt crystals are also energetically dead, as their crystals are completely isolated from one another. In order for our body to metabolize chemical table salt, it must waste tremendous amounts of energy to try to keep the body at its optimum fluid balance. This creates an unnecessary burdening of the elimination systems in the body. Water is also removed from other cells in the system in an attempt to neutralize the unnatural sodium chloride.

Himalayan Crystal Salt

Studies show that for each gram of table salt that your system cannot process, your body will use over twenty times the amount of cellular water to neutralize the sodium chloride in chemically-treated salt.

This can lead to water retention, cellulite, rheumatism, arthritis, gout, as well as kidney and gallbladder stones. With the knowledge that the everyday American eats about 5,000 mg of sodium chloride a day, it is clear that the issue is serious and needs to be adressed.

Choosing to use Himalayan Salt as an alternative can have a big impact on your total health and well-being.
